Walgreens Coupon Policy

I was glad to find out that Walgreens has posted their official coupon policy online. I was just telling someone this week that my local Walgreens is not very couponer-friendly, so you'd better believe I printed off a copy of their policy and added it to my coupon bag! This policy also clearly states the rules of using Register Rewards and store coupons, as well as stating that internet-printed coupons are accepted.

This policy should rectify some of the problems I've come across at Walgreens:

• When there is a buy one, get one free promotion, up to two coupons can be used, as long as the total doesn't become negative. (Previously I've only been allowed to use one coupon since the other item rang up as free.)
  
• A coupon that exceeds the amount of a sale item can be adjusted down. (Previously the coupon was often refused.)
  

If you are a teacher or homeschooler, remember that Walgreens is offering a discount on Wednesdays until September 15th! Check with your store to see if they are participating.

Educator Discount at Walgreens

The Walgreens stores in my area are offering a discount to teachers (and homeschoolers!) on Wednesdays through September 15th. Get a 15% discount on everything, and a 20% discount on Walgreens brand items (it rings through as the employee discount). You have to show proof of being a teacher or homeschooler (I showed the form I filed with the state for the 2009-2010 school year). This may be a regional promotion, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Thanks so much to Karen for telling me about this--I was able to get some great deals yesterday!

I totally meant to post this earlier and forgot!  In honor of Earth Day today, Walgreens has printer cartridge refills for only $1!  You can use this printable coupon or the coupon from Sunday's Walgreens ad (which is also probably available in stores--it usually is).  Refills are available for Dell, HP, Lexmark, Okidata, Primera, Sharp, and Xerox cartridges.  I have three cartridges ready to be refilled, so you know I'm making a trip over now! Just think of how many coupons I'll be able to print with those three cartridges!  :-)

Freebies4Mom shares the scoop on how to get a completely free 8x10 photo collage at Walgreens, through Friday 2/12! Download your own pictures and make a cute collage for Valentine's Day, or just to have on your wall. I ordered a collage of F's first year when they offered this last month.

You can also go to their website and print off a coupon to use in the store for 15% off your order on Friday the 12th only. It sounds like you could use this toward the Huggies deal, making it even better! Too bad I used up my coupons--though even without coupons, getting Huggies for $5.99 per pack after RR is below my target price, and with the 15% off they would be like $4.64--so maybe I'll have to go back AGAIN! :-)

Huggies Deal is Rolling!

I told you last week about the great Huggies deal at Walgreens--$3.99 a pack after coupons and Register Rewards. Well it gets better, because at least for the time being, this deal is ROLLING! That means that you are able to buy a pack, get a $3 RR, and then do another transaction and buy another pack (and a filler item), use your RR to lower your OOP, and earn another $3 RR. It doesn't usually work this way (as I explained in my earlier post), but at least for now, it is working! I can't guarantee that it will be working all week, or even that it will be working at your store, but it may be worth a try! People at Common Sense With Money are reporting in the comments if theirs are rolling, and so far everyone's are.

I did 6 transactions (I had some coupons from a mailer and also from a friend--thanks Jaci!) and just kept using the RR that printed, along with a coupon, and I had a filler item for each transaction (eggs x4 and toothbrushes x2--on clearance for $1.09 and perfect for shoeboxes!). Another filler idea is some cheap valentine pencils.

If you haven't printed the $2 off coupons yet, it looks like you can still do so (using FF, print here; using IE, print here). Remember, you can print 2 per computer. If you don't need them, either hand off the coupons to a mom who will use them, or use them yourself to get some cheap diapers for a gift or to donate to a church or shelter.

Walgreens Run

Walgreens was running their Pepsi/Lay's deal again this week, so I went in to stock up as well as to use my last free chocolate milk coupon. For the Pepsi/Lay's deal, buy $20, get a $10 RR, it ended up like I paid $1 per bag of chips and only $1.40 for each 12-pack, less than my target price. I got the Shredded Wheat both free with coupon and paid only $1 each for the John Frieda conditioners after coupons and RR (our girls go through a lot, and F's hair isn't even long yet!). I spent $20.48 after coupons and RRs.

This is such a great deal for diapers, I don't expect these coupons to last very long before they hit their print limits, so print yours out now! And if you don't use Huggies or don't have a baby in diapers, consider printing off your 2 coupons anyway, and either giving them to a mom who will use them or buying the diapers at Walgreens to donate to a shelter or church nursery.

**You can only buy one package at a time because only 1 RR will print out per transaction. Remember, you won't be able to use this RR on your second Huggies transaction, either, because a new $3 RR will not print out if you do. Either save your RRs for a later purchase (but don't forget about them--they expire in 2 weeks!), or do a third transaction that has at least 2 items in it in order to use both RRs (because you have to have as many items as coupons in a transaction). Weekly Shopping--saved 81%

Roundy's had their super-doubles event yesterday where they doubled 10 coupons per transaction instead of the normal 5. There was some questions as to whether coupons would double if they said "Do Not Double", but I asked at the service desk and she said the register would still double them automatically. I did 2 transactions and doubled 20 coupons (some said DND, but they all doubled automatically). I only bought what was on sale or what I had a coupon for, so I spent $16.68 and saved $70.23, a savings of 81%.

These items were better than free: Pillsbury pizza crust x4 and sweet rolls x2. I did the Pillsbury catalina deal and had $2.64 in overage. :-) I also earned an automatic "Roundy's Reward" of $1 off my order for spending $20 (which must be calculated before coupons).

These items were free: Salt and Pepper set x2, Puffs tissues, Crispix cereal, and Cheese Nips.

These items were $1 or less: Kleenex tissues, No Yolks x2, eggs x4, Kraft sliced cheese x2, Kraft shredded cheese x2, Kraft parmesan cheese, Hunt's spaghetti sauce x2, Chili powder x2, Muir Glen diced tomatoes x4, Uncrustables x2, bananas, lettuce, and Sunny D smoothie.

I also bought: Johnsonville italian sausage (for lasagna), New York garlic toast, and Orange juice.I went to Walgreens to buy my milk because they will take the free chocolate milk coupons. I got 4 gallons of milk and 2 half gallons of chocolate milk. I spent 11.16 on milk at Walgreens, making my overall total for the week $27.84. I really only paid $6.16 OOP at Walgreens because I used the $5 Huggies RR--and I had used the $10 Pepsi RR to pay for the Huggies, but I count the RRs (or catalinas) toward the product I am buying (to consider if it is a good deal), so that's why I didn't count it toward my OOP on the milk.

My goal is to spend an average of about $50 a week on groceries throughout the month. Because I shop the sales, usually I have a couple of bigger weeks and a couple of smaller weeks. This week was a smaller week. My average spending for the month of January was $52.32 with an average savings of 71.5% or $116 a week. (You can see my other shopping trips for the month here, here, and here.) If I spend 2 1/2 hours a week clipping coupons and shopping sales, that's like "making" $46 an hour! Is couponing worth it? It is to me! :-)

I chatted with Caela in the store and we both noticed that the sales were weaker on the super-doubles weeks. Last time the store doubled 10 coupons I also spent less than usual (not that I'm complaining!). I like that they've done it at the end of the month both times, so I can use up some coupons that are about to expire. Rumor has it this might become a semi-regular occurence. I won't complain, as long as all my coupons double!

Huggies Wipes--Only $0.75 each!

According to Deal Seeking Mom, there is a new in-store coupon booklet at Walgreens. I haven't been to my store to verify this, but I'm hoping it's true! Why? Because one of the coupons is for $1/1 Huggies Wipes tubs (limit 2), and if you combine it with the $0.75/1 Huggies coupons I told you about here, (looks like they are gone now, so I hope you printed them last week!) you can get wipes as low as $0.75 this week at Walgreens because they are on sale.

Use $1/1 Walgreens Huggies coupon (will deduct $2 automatically)
Use (2) $0.75/1 Huggies Wipes coupons

Walgreeens Pepsi/Lay's Deal

There is a great deal going on at Walgreens this week on Pepsi/Lay's products. Buy $20, get $10 RRs. 12-packs are 3/$15, chips are 2/$5, and 2 liters are 4/$5. I got 5 12-pks of Mtn Dew, 2 Tostitos chips, 4 oreos, 2 gallons of milk, and a 1/2 gallon of chocolate milk. I spent $18.33 after RRs. Walgreens did accept my free chocolate milk coupon! I could only use one, though, because they only had 1 gallon each of whole and 1%. Oh well--I got 2 free gallons of milk at the grocery store this week anyway!

CVS also has the Pepsi deal running this week--spend $20, get $10 ECBs, but the prices are different so it's not quite as good a deal (but still not too bad). If you don't have time to go this week, CVS and Walgreens will be doing something similar next week, but the prices look like they may be different. And if you are wondering what to use those $10 RRs or ECBs on, Walgreens has a Pampers deal this week and a Huggies deal next week, and CVS has a Huggies deal the week of 1/31. Getting Started at Drugstores

One way to save a lot of money on household items is to play "the drugstore game". This refers to rolling ECBs and RRs at CVS and Walgreens. It can be confusing at first, but once you know the rules, I encourage you to watch the sales and give it a try! Confused by the coupon lingo? Go here for definitions and explanations. Playing the drugstore game is how I can get toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, chapstick, candles, and other items for free, and Huggies or Pampers diapers for around $6 a pack. Interested? Read on to get learn the rules and join the game!

To get started at CVS, you need to sign up for their loyalty card to get sale prices and to earn ECBs (extra care bucks), which are coupons for money off your next order that print at the bottom of the receipt. So you might buy something for $2 and get $2 in ECBs back. You had to pay $2 OOP (out of pocket) for the item, but it is LIKE you get it for free because now you save $2 off something else later. It does require you to remember to use the ECB (within one month), and the way to maximize your savings here is to keep "rolling your ECBs", which means you keep buying products that produce more ECBs, all the while paying with your old ECBs. The best way to do this and minimize your OOP is to do separate transactions. It can be confusing at first, until you get the hang of it. ECBs can be used along with manufacturer coupons, because ECBs are store (CVS) coupons. You can also use multiple ECBs to pay for one item, but not for tax.

Walgreens is similar, but a little different. You don't need a savings card. You earn RRs (register rewards) on certain purchases, and RRs are good for 2 weeks. These are a little harder to "roll" because they are manufacturer coupons, NOT store coupons, so they can't be combined with other coupons. So if I have a $2 RR and I want to buy a pack of Huggies for $8, I can only use the RR if I DON'T use a coupon on the Huggies (which I always want to do). One way to get around this is to throw another item into your order that you don't have a coupon for (like a candy bar or dozen eggs) and then you can use both the RR and the diaper coupon because you have 2 coupons and 2 items in your order. Make sense? (I know, it's as clear as mud. I was almost in tears during my first few transactions using RRs at Walgreens, trying to figure out all the rules. It gets easier, though!) Another example, if you earn a $2 RR by buying Huggies, you can't use that RR on another pack of Huggies expecting to earn another $2 RR. They don't "roll" that way. You can, however, use the $2 Huggies RR to buy Tylenol and then earn a $2 RR from the Tylenol, because they are from different companies (remember, they are manufacturer coupons, not store coupons). Again, clear as mud, right? :-)

Rite Aid is another drugstore that offers single check rebates on products, which is another way to save money. I don't have this store near me, so I'm not familiar with their policies, but it seems they offer good deals, too.

I don't shop at the drugstores every week, so I don't post their deals. However, several of the blogs on my sidebar do post some highlights and coupon matches every week, so consider subscribing to one of their blogs. Deal Seeking Mom posts all the weekly deals for these stores as well as Walmart, Target, and others, so I'd suggest subscribing to her blog if you are interested. You can subscribe on her homepage--on the right side she has little icons. There are orange curves for Google Reader RSS (my preference--updated several times a day) or an envelope for a daily digest email sent in the evening to your email address, as well as other icons for twitter and all that.

Walgreens $5/$25 coupon

A friend asked me yesterday if I'd been to Walgreens lately. I told her I didn't go very much because their Register Rewards (RRs) frustrate me because of all their limitations. She told me about a Theraflu deal she had just done and was excited about. Then I came home and found out about the $5/$25 coupon good through today. I decided to search out some deals and give it a try last night with F in tow (she's a trooper!).

I saw these ideas from Deal Seeking Mom. I knew I would have to improvise, since our store is frequently out of sale items, so I searched out some more Walgreens deals as I made my list, just in case.

Here's what I came up with. I did two transactions. The first was a Fusion razor (cpn), Dentek floss picks (cpn), Robitussin DM, Halls (cpn), Emergen-C, Vaseline lotion, Chapstick, and Cascade (cpn). I used the $5/$25 coupon and my total after coupons was $22.79. I received $25 in RRs.

Transaction #2. I bought Chapstick, Dentek Floss, Vaseline lotion, Caramels, Candy Corn, and 2 dozen eggs. I paid with $13 in RRs from the first transaction, paid $4.71 OOP, and earned $13 in RRs.

My total OOP for both transactions was $27.50 and I still have $25 in RRs left to spend. I'm hoping diapers go on sale next week so I can use them all! :-)
