Umm...Nielsen? We Don't Really Watch TV (aka Save Money on TV)

Our family was selected to provide our TV viewing information for the Nielsen Ratings over a summer sweeps week. We've done this before for radio usage, and you get paid for filling out and returning the surveys, so I was excited to do it again. Especially since I knew something they didn't that would make filling out the surveys really easy. . . We don't really watch TV.

I had an attack of conscience, so I told the guy on the phone that we rarely watch TV at our house, just in case it mattered, but he said that was fine, they needed info from all types of homes. I guess they want to know what we aren't watching, too! Yay, I can get paid for NOT watching TV!

But why don't we watch TV? It's not because we're against it or anything, but we've chosen not to subscribe to cable or satellite service, which saves us anywhere from $300 to $600 a year or more. We get about 4 channels with our antenna, but we rarely turn on the TV anyway. We have high-speed internet, so we can watch our TV shows online. A bonus with this is that you can watch your shows whenever it is convenient for you--like after the kids are in bed. You can also pause it if kids are interrupting you--like coming downstairs 3 times! I guess this is also true of Tivo, but we don't have to pay for it! :-)

Go to the website of your favorite show's channel (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc) and look for full episodes. All of these websites have many shows available to watch online for free. The one channel I would watch all the time if I had cable is HGTV (not that I'm handy or decorating-savvy, I just wish I were!). I recently discovered that a LOT of cable shows are posted on Hulu, so I can get my HGTV fix for free! Then I found out that HGTV.com posts shows on their website as well. USA Network also has full episodes (of shows like Monk and Psych--2 other favorites!). I'm sure other cable networks do, too, but I haven't checked.

So if you are looking for another way to save some money, consider ditching the Tivo, cable or satellite bills! You might find that you won't be missing as much as you think, and think of how much you'll be saving! And in case you're wondering, I have no idea how we were selected to fill in the Nielsen surveys. My only guess is it's because I do a lot of online surveys through a few different companies. If you are interested in doing online surveys, feel free to email me and I'll get you started!

One thing that you might wonder about is the combo pack, $19.95 for 8 lbs of meat. This works out to $2.49/lb, which I don't consider a great deal (I prefer $1.99/lb or less). Even throwing in the mustard, ketchup, and buns doesn't sweeten it enough for me, since those are inexpensive items. However, if you are low on meat or planning a party, I could see why you might go for this deal.

Fun DVDs: Brum

We recently discovered some fun DVDs and I wanted to share them with you. Brum is a live-action TV series recorded in England about the adventures of a cute little car that drives by itself. The girls have really gotten a kick out of it! Each episode is short, about 10 minutes, and there are several episodes per DVD. The story lines are pretty simple and involve Brum the car saving the day, either by rescuing someone or catching a bad guy who has stolen something. The actors don't talk, but each episode is narrated by a child's voice that keeps the story moving. The episodes have a lot of humor and exaggerated characters and situations that the kids find hilarious! This series is not animated and doesn't have fancy special effects, it is just simple and funny. Adults may roll their eyes at the goofiness, but the kids love it. To be honest, I have found them quite entertaining and it's also fun to watch the kids' reactions! :-)

Have you heard of Brum?

Overheard: Can I Have a Cell Phone?

H: Mommy, can I have a cell phone?
Me: Why?
H: The kids at school have them.
Me: Kids your age?
H: Yes.
Me: What would you use it for?
H: (shrugging) To call my friends.
Me: (trying HARD to contain myself) But you don't even call your friends from our regular phone! Do you want to call your friends? You can use our home phone, you know.
H: No thanks.

Are landlines just not cool? On a sidenote, she's homeschooled, but I sent her to summer school so she could take some fun classes (computers, art, etc), and this is what she came home with after one week, wanting a cell phone before she even turns 7. I guess it could be a lot worse. . .

Is She a Good Baby?

We've been asked many times since J was born, "Is she a good baby?" Actually, every time we have a new baby we are asked that question multiple times. You would think I would know how to answer it by now, but I don't! Every single time, it gives me pause. Sometimes I answer the question with a question, "what do you mean by 'good baby'?"

Both my pause and my question always surprise the person asking. But seriously, what is the definition of a good baby? Some have said a "good baby" is one who doesn't cry much and lets us sleep at night. Well, baby J doesn't fit that definition, so does that mean she is by default a "bad baby"? I should say not!

So most often, when asked this question, I respond with, "She's a normal baby. She eats, poops, cries, and likes to be held a lot." Babies are a gift from God, even if they are colicky, spit up all over the place, and get up several times a night. Having a newborn isn't easy, but it's a precious season of life that won't last long.

(One time I was sick of hearing this question--maybe it was the sleep deprivation--so I really surprised someone by saying she was born with a sinful nature like the rest of us, so no, she's not good, just like none of us is good. True, but probably not the answer they were looking for! But maybe they'll think twice before asking that question again!)

Overheard: Windmills are Like Coupons

Whenever we pass windmill turbines, we explain to the girls that they are generating electricity for buildings when they are turned by the wind. Ted even dreams of having one of his own someday!

Ted: Girls, look at the windmills!
H: But they're not turning, there's no wind.
G: Does that mean there's no electricity in the buildings so they can't turn on the lights?
Ted: No, when the windmills turn, it's like "extra". (Ted went on to try to explain a couple different ways that they don't generate instant electricity, but give a "credit". They weren't getting it.)
Jessica: Girls, windmills are like coupons. When they're turning, the people in the buildings save money on electricity.
H&G: Oh, that makes sense!

Everything comes back to coupons with me! :-)
