Weekly Groceries

With this week being "super doubles", I thought I would only do 2 transactions and double 20 coupons, but I did 4 transactions and doubled 39 coupons!  I still managed to stay on budget with my Roundy's trip, spending $49.53 and saving $192.32, or 74%.

These items were free or better than free (overage):  6 boxes of General Mills cereal, 6 pouches of Betty Crocker potatoes, Manwich x2, eggs, Dawn, a CFL lightbulb, 7up 2-liters x2, Muir Glen large can of tomatoes, and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter (which I'll submit for the Land O Lakes rebate and get a coupon for FREE Land O Lakes butter!)

These items were $1 or less:  Ortega Salsa x2, Taco Bell Salsa, PastaRoni x6, bananas, string cheese x14 (perfect for snacks and picnics, and good until October!), Special K Granola x2, Puffs x2, Pillsbury Cookie Dough, Plain Yoplait (to make homemade yogurt with some of that milk!), Crystal Farms cheese x2, Fruit Chillers x11.

I also bought lettuce, 3 lbs of ground beef, 4 gallons of milk, and 4 big jars of natural applesauce.

So I did well at Roundy's, but I went over my weekly budget of $55 because I spent $19.01 at Aldi, making my total for the week $68.54.  At Aldi I bought 2 gallons of milk, bananas, broccoli, strawberries, macaroni and cheese x6, chili beans x2, whip cream, tortillas x6, and some cake mix and frosting.

My total for the month is $185.28, but if I take off the diapers and vitamins that I counted in my groceries the past couple of weeks, it makes my overall total for the month $164.28, an average of $54.76 a week.  (That makes me feel a little better.)

Don't you just love these Super Double days? It's so easy to walk out with a low OOP. I did three transactions, doubled 30 coupons. My first one was 2 heavy bags of groceries for under $0.50!

Thanks for all your grocery posts!

IMPRESSIVE!!! But I'm curious -- why did you buy 4 gallson of milk at one store and then 2 more gallons at Aldi? Was there a reason they weren't all purchased at one store?

Melissa-
Good question. I was kicking myself a little! I went to Aldi early in the week with all my kids, then went to Roundy's last night. Honestly, I forgot that I had bought some milk at Aldi already! (I guess I'm not on my A-game this week--blame it on pregnancy brain and hubby's being out of town!)

I bought 2 gallons at Aldi because they are cheaper there. I knew I would get some more at Roundy's with the cereal deal. I ended up with one from that and then 2 from the doubled Kemps in-ad coupon. I shouldn't have bought that 4th gallon--I didn't even need it to hit $25. Oh well.

It's okay, we do go through a lot of milk, so we will use it, and this way I had enough extra to make a batch of my homemade yogurt! The challenge was fitting it all in the refrigerator!!

You amaze me with your grocery shopping!!! I did 3 transactions and spent $81. I saved $73.... but I had to buy stuff I didn't have coupons for and that weren't on sale too, not a fan. Why is it that we run out of the staples all at the same time? :)

Only question I have is about the Aldi's mac and cheese - how does it stack up to Kraft? I just cannot swallow the 1.09 that Pick N save charges for Kraft - I had snagged a BUNCH of dollar off Kraft mac and cheese last year, and used them all, so I'm not used to actually PAYiNG for it. ;) I like it for a quick lunch, but if Aldi's is cheaper and just as good, I'll go for it...

But my experience is that store brand mac and cheese just isn't as good. I hope this isn't true of Aldi!

It's not quite as good as Kraft, but sometimes I'll mix a box of Kraft and a box of generic and that helps. I know, I prefer Kraft, too, but you're right, I don't prefer the price!

You know you've become an extreme couponer when you can't even take the price of Kraft dinner when it's normal price. My husband just looked over my shoulder and said, "Geez...it's like, a buck, right? Just get some and quit being a dork."

I, of course, had to wail, "But $1 adds up! If I buy ten boxes, that's $10!!"

"Quit being so dramatic. It's JUST macaroni and cheese..."

"Noooooo...it's not! It's our family's financial well being! If I fall off the wagon now, everything I've accomplished with my coupons, everything I've saved in the last year for vacation, will be all for naught! And then what? We'll be back to beans and rice because I lead us into financial ruination!"

"You need to relax. Go have a glass of wine. I think financial ruination is a bit excessive, don't you?"

"Well...I suppose I could get some of the Annie's mac and cheese - it's only 64 cents at Walmart..."

"There you go...that's a good, reasonable girl..." ;)

I thrive on being dramatic with my coupons. It gets the job done. ;) And now, you see what I have to deal with?

HA!! You guys are too funny! It's true, though....It's only $1, but I feel like it's too much for mac n cheese. But my husband would probably say the same thing as yours!

They don't understand...I have a pretty rigid grocery budget, and he tried to be nice and run to the store for me a few weeks ago. Bought a few things I had coupons for, and you BET I went back to the store the next day with the receipt and said, "My husband forgot these..."

It's just seriously one place that I can slash costs very simply and easily. Try offering WE Energies a coupon for discounted energy -they'll laugh at you! ;)

Andrea - you made my day! I got up at 5.30 am to run to the store to be back before my husband left for work. He says I'm addicted!

I found the CentrumKids chewable tablet vitamins (60 ct) 50% off at Copps. Reg 6.39 - Sale 3.19 and it had a $1.00 off peelie on it which made it 1.19 for me. Even without doubling still a good deal.

I hear ya! My hubby is perfectly fine leaving the grocery shopping to me--he's afraid he'll forget a coupon or screw something up! :-) Because of this, he is willing to watch the kids and even bathe them all while I go out grocery shopping each week!
