Laundry Tips

Here are some tips I've been using to help with the sometimes overwhelming task of laundry! Please let me know if you have any more to share with me! I'm always looking for more ideas!

  • Start a load before breakfast each morning, set a timer so you don't forget about it, then throw it in the dryer after breakfast, and hopefully there will be 10 minutes sometime during the day to put it away (though I know that doesn't always happen--but at least it will be clean!)
  • To avoid ironing, throw those few shirts and slacks into the dryer for 10 minutes (set a timer so you don't forget them!) and then shake out and hang up.
  • Wrinkled clothes? Downy wrinkle-releaser spray works well and dries pretty quickly, or throw the clothes in the dryer with a damp towel for 10 minutes.
  • Cut dryer sheets in half to get twice the amount.
  • Have the kids help you sort and put away the laundry--the piles aren't as neat, but it goes a lot faster and helps them learn responsibility and where things go.

These tips probably would work best for older kids, but our little ones will be getting older!
My mom gave my brother, sister, and I each a mesh type of bag for our socks and underwear and when it was full you just threw the whole bag in the wash and you were good to go! This prevented mixing up and losing a lot of stuff.
We each had a laundry basket and when it was full it was our responsibility to throw it in the wash and get it out of the drier in a timely matter. My mom was creative if our clothes overstayed their welcome. Even though Ella is only 2 1/2 she has her own basket and she knows where her dirty clothes go. I'm looking forward to when she can toss it all in on her own!

A few of mine: If you need to iron something and you have a day to do it, smooth the piece of clothing out between your mattress and box spring and sleep on them overnight.

If your clothes are still damp after being in the dryer, stick them back in for five or ten minutes with a dry bathtowel to get the rest of the moisture out.

Energy saver: Use the cold water formula detergent to save money on your heating bills.

Oh, something I found: Scented dryer sheets have chemicals in them (it's where the scent comes from) that can be toxic over time. When you put your clothes in with one, they coat the clothes with this chemical scent and then it soaks into your skin.

Despite this, I still use them. Those Downy balls never work right for me, so... toxic chemicals ho!
